All musicians, credible ones at least, can recognize a distinction between inspiration and originality. They would have to otherwise they'd have no choice but to pursue a career under the banner of something like GABBA or Dread Zeppelin. You can see many who have tried and fail to be 'inspired'...c which is potentially how La Roux balance out their synth heavy melodies. The duo doesn't channel success through retro-nostalgia-culture but they are channelling their sound through stylistic filters of the past. Ironically this has resulted in their inspiring originality.
